Second Growth Homes is rooted in Tenakee Springs, a small hot-springs community on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska accessible only by floatplane or ferry. Owner Sterling C Chew built the company around a vertically integrated timber supply: the company logs and mills second-growth spruce on nearby Corner Bay, producing lumber that goes directly into the homes it builds and sells.

That supply chain gives the company unusual cost control for remote Southeast Alaska construction, where barge freight can double material costs. Structures range from small shed-sized “TinyHome” packages (starting around 10×12 feet, per their website) to full custom cabins and larger timber-frame homes.
